Dragons V Reading and Loughor. 10 May. Underhill Park.

Sorry for the delay posting the pictures. We had a fantastic end to our rugby season as we played Loughor and Reading. We payed 4 games in Underhill park in awful weather! We just managed to fit our pitches between the pools of standing water. Thank you so much to all the parents, players and coaches for your understanding and enthusiasm. The highlight for me was the England V Wales game at the end. I was a little disappointed to hear "swing low sweet chariots" being sung by our English friends! After the game we all went back to our club house where Reading showed us how to tour in style. The boys all wore white shirts, club ties and international caps! The drinking games were great fun! A joint return tour to Reading with our friends from Loughor is on the cards. Thanks again everyone. Mark.

Dragons V South Gower (Away) 27/04/14.

We played South Gower today at their ground today. We introduced some of next years rules so that the boys can get used to contested tackles. Next year a ruck can be formed after a tackle is made. This allows teams to battle for possession of the ball. Thank you to Rhidian for refereeing the game and coaching both teams. The Dragons played really well. Nigel, Mal and I were really proud. Well done boys. Our captain this week was Rhidian. The tackle of the week trophy was awarded to Rhys. Lewis won player of the week. Thank you "Stuffy the Dragon", Ffion and Holly who presented the awards! Mark.

Dragons V New Dock Stars (Away). 13/04/14

We played the New Dock Stars on Sunday. They made us feel very welcome at their fantastic ground (I am very envious!). The rugby was great with both teams playing well. The Dragons played their first game without one of the coaches on the pitch to help; although Mal and I could not help shoting instructions! The Dragons were fantstic and we were really proud of the boys this week. Reggie was awarded player of the week. He played really well and is growing in confidence. Well done Dragons you were all brilliant! Mark.

Dragons V Swansea Uplands. Home. 32/03/14.

We played Swansea Uplands today at home in Bishopston. The weather was cold but dry. Swansea Uplands are a great team and we put in a reasonable performance against them. Our captain today was Will. Tackler of the week was Lewis. Our player of the week was Sam. He was the first recipient of our beautiful sterling silver platter! No expense has been spent on this wonderful award! I just hope its more durable than the last 3 player of the week trophies! Mark.

Dargons V Vardre (Away) 16/03/14

We played Vardre today at their ground. The weather was amazing but the rugby was not! The Dragons were thrashed in the first 10 minutes. We did not score a try whilst Vardre ran in 6. Nick, our official photographer for the day, got so boared that he took a 'selfie' and a picture of a worm! After the break the boys appeared to wake up and the rugby improved! Our Captain today was Corey. Player of the week was awarded to Aedan. Mark.

Joining Our Team

If you are visiting the blog because you are interested in joining our team I thought you may like some information about us.

The Mumbles Dragons are a great little team. Our current age group is under 11’s which caters for boys and girls in year 6. We are part of Mumbles RFC a club with great heritage and an exciting future as we plan to build new pitches and an amazing club house in Underhill Park. Our team has many original players who started when they were just 6 years old. Unfortunately some of our team stopped playing rugby at the start of this season because of other
commitments. This is why we are trying to recruit.

We train every Wednesday evening in Whitestone Primary School at 18:30. Games are held on Sunday mornings. There are hundreds of photographs on our blog that show the team in action.

There won’t be any charge for new players until you are sure you want to join our team. Come along to training, meet the players, and see if you like it. If you stay with us our subs are just £3.50 a month if you pay by direct debit. We will provide a team jersey and socks. The kit required is basic. You will need a pair of rugby boots and a gum shield (available from stores such as Sports Direct).

Training

WRU Rules for Under 11's Rugby

1) For all passes, free kicks and penalties a player must place the ball on the floor and tap it forward with the foot. If done incorrectly it must be taken again. Defending team must retreat 5m when a free pass is awarded. No Cavalry Charges permitted. 2m maximum run for receiver of pass.

2) Tackle below waist. More than one tackler permitted. The tackler, or first player arriving at a tackle, can pick up the ball and go unless ruck is formed.

3) Contested tackles (rucking). Only 1 player from each team to contest the tackle. Can be any player involved in the tackle or an arriving player. Acting scrum half must pass the ball after a ruck has been formed. Off side line is 1m back from the rear most part of the body at the tackle area.

4) Scrums are static. 5 v 5 scrum for knock on. Both hookers can strike for the ball. Defending scrum half to remain at tunnel. Winning scrum half passes the ball from the scrum.

5) 4 man uncontested lineouts. No catch and drive. No Lifting. Ball must enter above head height. Off side remains until scrum half passes or run with the ball.

6) No mauling, no hand-offs and no ripping the ball allowed.

7) Kicking is permitted in your own half.

8) The team who have scored drop kicks the ball to the oposing team at the re-start.

9) Trys and conversions are the only way to score. Use available posts.

Membership

In common with the other junior teams we would like your children to become members of Mumbles Rugby Club. Membership is £42 a year. The Dragons keep most of the money which we will use to purchase training equipment and provide the players with their team clothing. £10 of the fee goes to Mumbles Rugby Club. The money can be paid in cash, cheque or by direct debit. If you have any problem with the fees please contact Mark in strict confidence. We don't want the fees to stop the kids from playing.
